We are facing a crisis of creativity
The world is changing at unprecedented speed. Businesses and social enterprises,
important drivers of growth, prosperity, and happiness, need deep, sustainable
solutions to overcome the complex overlapping challenges of the 21st Century.
The demand for personal creativity and business innovation is at an all time high.
At the same time, it is becoming clear that 20th Century organizations cannot
adapt to the challenges of the creative economy, and America's schools and
colleges are not preparing students to meet these challenges as they enter the
workforce. Systems designed for the 20th Century are not holding up in the 21st.
So, what can we do? What practical, concrete steps can we take to bring creativity
and innovation back into our world?
The research is clear: people are born creative and yet, our common institutions
fail to nurture and develop creativity over time.
We need to build a climate for creativity in schools and businesses across the U.S.
What is a climate for
Creativity can be seen through four lenses: creative people, creative process,
creative product, and creative press (environment / culture). We believe that only
through systematic focus on the environment for creativity, will organizations
develop the people, systems, and products needed to truly change the world.
Organizational culture is the key determinant of organizational performance.
At Climate4Creativity Systems, we believe that purposeful development of
this environment for creativity is the antidote to the creativity crisis - the very best
creative organizations are deliberately designed as safe, caring communities that
inspire learning, leadership, and creativity.
We define this Climate4Creativity using four constructs:
Safety - physical and emotional safety.
Community - sense of belonging and inclusiveness.
Learning - continuous, engaged learning.
Leadership - informed, inspirational leadership.
By evaluating the current state, focusing on a small number of battle-tested tactics, and taking decisive action to improve, schools, colleges, and businesses can tranform themselves into creative places -- places which demonstrate their own Climate4Creativity every day. Only through this systematic, purposeful creative transformation can complex organizations like businesses, schools, and colleges hope to become truly creative places:
Safe, caring communities that inspire
learning, leadership, and creativity...
